Asbestos
It's a material that was used in buildings from the 1950s through to 1999 when it was banned. The construction industry often used asbestos to keep homes warm and to help with fire-proofing. Asbestos in good condition is not a hazard.
Why it can be dangerous
If materials containing asbestos are disturbed or damaged, fibres are released into the air. When these fibres are inhaled they can cause serious diseases which often take a long time to develop, and once diagnosed may be impossible to treat.
Where asbestos is found
Asbestos fibres were typically mixed into cement, plaster and other materials, and for homes built or refurbished before the year 2000, it can be found in:
- Pipe lagging
- Insulation boards
- Textured coatings, such as ceiling finishes
- Gutters, rainwater pipes and water tanks
- Roofing materials on garages and shed
How does Coastline Housing manage asbestos in your home?
We carry out surveys of all Coastline homes to check for asbestos. If we find asbestos and we’re worried about it, then we’ll arrange for a licenced professional to remove it. If we find asbestos and it’s in good condition, then we’ll probably leave it in its place but make sure that we regularly come back to check on it.
Can I do any DIY?
You shouldn’t carry out any home improvements or DIY in your home without our permission (unless it’s basic decorating like painting a wall). If we believe that there’s asbestos where you plan on doing DIY, then we may tell you not to do it if it means removing or damaging the materials that include asbestos.
