A primary concern is the health and welfare of our customers, which is why Coastline is keen to continue developing and install equipment that will reduce radon levels in your home.
Coastline is at the forefront of dealing with the effects of radon in social housing and has formed a long established relationship with both the Health Protection Agency and the local Council, working in partnership with both to design and install suitable systems in our properties.
The system installed for Coastline by our Contractor PJD Martin Ltd is an Active Fan Sump system. This involves creating a small sump under the floor and installing a fan and pipework to discharge the gas outside the property. The fan is connected to the electrical supply in the property and costs around £50 per year to run. We will, however, be looking into ways in which the running costs may be reduced in the future and welcome resident input on this subject.
Concerns have been raised regarding the electricity costs from radon prevention units and these are quite understandable. However, whilst we sympathise with our residents on this issue, we have been unable to source any other, more economic systems which provide similar levels of efficiency. To be effective the units must be switched on permanently and therefore it would be difficult for us to establish a system that enabled the units to be run completely free of charge.
Coastline has considered alternative methods of paying for the electricity, including using rental income funds to subsidise those customers that have radon remediation equipment. However, it was felt that would be unfair on those that did not have this equipment installed.
