The 1st Redruth Guides have celebrated 100 years of Guiding with the planting of 100 daffodil bulbs in gardens at Coastline Housing’s Miner’s Court.
Residents and staff at the sheltered housing scheme in Redruth were delighted to hear of the Guides’ anniversary planting expedition, and all look forward to enjoying the colourful flowers in the spring.
The girls planted the bulbs under the expert guidance of Coastline gardener Rob Exelby, and Supported Housing Officer Jacquie Pilcher.
Jacquie explains: “The Guides hold their meetings just opposite Miner’s Court in the Salvation Army Hall, so we have a great relationship with them. They come over to the main building at Christmas to entertain the residents who always love seeing them; so we were more than happy to oblige when they approached us about planting some bulbs to mark their anniversary.”
Lisa Watson of 1st Redruth Guides added: “The girls were very excited planting the ‘Guiding Sprit’ daffodil bulbs at Miner’s Court. As Jacquie explained, we visit them every Christmas and this is now an added extra to keep in touch with the residents in the spring as well.
“Girl Guides across the world are celebrating 100 years of Guiding and it’s great that we can involve another generation. Members of the Guiding Association in Cornwall are doing so many things to celebrate our centenary.
We started at the top of the Beacon at Carn Brea singing the top campfire songs and also held a centenary challenge, collecting 100 coins for 100 years in aid of Children’s hospice South West Precious Lives Appeal. We are also organising ‘Boogie at the Biomes’ - a celebratory concert at The Eden Project - bands are top secret at the moment!
“These are only a few of the fantastic events organised, but we finish our centenary year in style with a party at Crealy Adventure Park! Happy birthday to the Guiding Associations across the world!”
