A Redruth based Extra Care scheme is welcoming people from the local area to take advantage of a wide range of first class facilities and recreational activities.
Miners Court, located in the centre of Redruth, consists of 62 flats, providing accommodation for 68 residents.
Originally officially opened by Princess Diana in April 1985, the scheme was relaunched last year with an official visit by the Duke of Kent for a new generation of older people. The development underwent a £1 million remodel, which saw all flats undergo a complete refurbishment, with improved facilities for residents and extra services offered to the wider community.
A stylish and welcoming dining room provides lunches Monday to Friday. The cook, who has been at Miners Court almost since it first opened, uses fresh local produce and caters for a wide range of dietary requirements. A luncheon club, where a three course meal costs £4.60, is already very popular with the local community, so early booking is required to secure a place (Call 01209 314150).
Residents can get their hair done at their own on-site hair dressing salon, Hair Hub. The salon, which also offers manicure, pedicure and waxing services also opens its doors to people living nearby. Call 01209 200829 to book an appointment.
The services provided have been widely welcomed. Resident Sylvia Davey is delighted to be living in Miners Court. “It really is like living in a five star hotel. I never thought I would use the hairdressing salon here as I had my own hairdresser, but they did a brilliant job.”
Other facilities available to the local community include an assisted bathroom and wet room. These are currently free of charge, but from April there will a minimal charge of £2.50 per half hour.
Miners Court is one of four of Coastline’s sheltered housing schemes to boast its very own internet café. Opened at the end of 2010, it aims to help hundreds of elderly people get online. The cafés are not just about accessing the internet, they also have Nintendo Wiis and digital cameras to encourage people to get involved. The equipment is already being used, with grandchildren showing their grandparents what can be done.
A dedicated scheme co-ordinator also runs a full programme of activities and events for residents and local people. More fun, no falls gentle armchair exercise sessions take place once a month, while fortnightly tea dances are enjoyed on a Friday afternoon. The Salvation Army holds its ‘Cameo’ meeting each Monday between 3pm and 4.30pm and all are welcome.
Coming soon to Miners Court is a weight matters group, a weekly local walking group and craft afternoons featuring sewing, card making and other activities.
